A wealthy young man is conned into staging a fake kidnapping in order to be a hero and win the affection of a girl he's madly in love with. But when one of the hired kidnappers is accidentally killed during the charade, he's forced to actually save her life while not revealing that it's been a ruse all along.。这部电影带有浓厚的新现实主义风格，基本上与费里尼中后期的神采飞扬不一样，采用了纪实手法来讲述一个爱情故事，结构简单，多用长镜头。片中的内容与战后意大利贫瘠的社会现实相吻合。本片也是费里尼首次与自己的妻子玛西娜合作。乡下姑娘莉莉加入一家剧团，她的表演相当成功，不但在观众中大受欢迎，剧团团长契克也暗中爱上了她。由于契克常常醋意大发，剧团惹上了许多麻烦，最终不得不解散收场……。
